Teaching English as a Second Language is a valuable skill for ministry anywhere in the world! The EDGE and Summer EDGE programs make TESL certification available to all students who complete the 21 hour program outlined below. Teacher Education majors can also complete their TESL endorsement by participating in the Summer EDGE programs available each year.

Students who complete ESL certification or endorsement are marked by the following knowledge, skills, and attitudes:
- Ability to empathize with the student
- Ability to determine a student’s proficiency (strengths and weaknesses)
- Ability to plan lessons and units that correspond to the student’s proficiency
- Ability to assess a student’s understanding of a given subject
- First-hand, practical knowledge of the second-language learning process
- Understanding of cross-cultural communication principles and difficulties
- Understanding the concepts of world-view and cultural mindset
- Recognition of one’s own ethnocentrism
- Ability to manage a class as well as an individual lesson time
- Understanding of English language syntax and grammar
- Understanding and guiding the various goals of ESL learners
