EDGE Latin America/Mexico
From one of the biggest cities of the world to rural communities that only thirty years ago had no electricity, students have many different opportunities in
Mexico
. The first month is in beautiful Ceurnavaca, where students can take up to six credit hours of Spanish while living with Mexican host families. The next five months involve various Intercultural Studies classes in the metropolitan city of
Puebla.
Several weeklong trips into
Mexico City
and Tecozautla, round out the experience.
Stephen Says: "September 16th is Independence Day in Mexico , and we had the privilege of being here for it. The celebrations culminate in the “Grito” at 11:00 pm on the 15th. We got off the ruta (bus) at a park near the downtown. There was a carnival going on, and there was an incredible amount of people and stands that seemed to pop up overnight. The magnificent buildings were decorated in the Mexican flag. As we drew closer to the Zocalo we found ourselves unable to move because of all the people. At 11:00 there was a TV broadcast from Mexico City in which the President, Vicente Fox, led the nation in the Grito. The excitement in the crowd was amazing. It was estimated that about a million people would be there, and I believe it. There were tiny children being carried on their parents’ heads and old ladies standing to the side. To see that much of the community all together, celebrating and enjoying being Mexican was pretty impressive.”
